THE DIVING COMMUNITY

For dive centres

Practical information for medical enquiries, diver consultations and preparation for contact with ZanAid.

Before an activity

Diving operators are often the first people a visitor asks about a medical form or health concern. Encourage the diver to raise the question before the planned course or trip, with the form and relevant medical information available.

A medical assessment considers the individual and the activity. Contact the clinic to discuss the requested form and appointment arrangements.

When a diver is unwell

A symptom following a dive needs to be described in its diving context. Provide the current location, a callback number, a clear account of what happened and any treatment already given.

For a suspected serious injury, contact local emergency medical services first and DAN for additional diving medical assistance. Follow the operator’s current emergency plan. Do not wait for a routine enquiry to be answered.

Chamber information

ZanAid’s chamber work has longstanding links with the island’s diving community. Current treatment arrangements should come from the clinical team and follow assessment of the person’s condition.

Practical questions

A diver has been asked for a medical form. What should they bring?

Ask the diver to bring the complete form requested by the operator or training organisation, relevant medical reports and a current medication list. They should contact the clinic ahead of the activity to discuss the requested assessment.

Can an enquiry be made before the diver arrives in Zanzibar?

For a non-urgent enquiry, contact the clinic with the planned dates, the type of diving and the reason for the medical question. The appropriate appointment and any records needed can then be discussed.

What information is useful after a diving concern?

A clear symptom timeline, relevant medical history and dive-computer or log information can help the medical team. Include treatment already given and the diver’s current location. Gathering records must not delay urgent medical care.
