Medical doctor · PhD
Dr Mike Zangenberg
Mike brings a strong background in infectious diseases and tropical medicine to ZanAid, combining Danish hospital experience with clinical and research work in East Africa. At the clinic, his work spans family medicine, travel health, vaccinations and illnesses acquired while travelling.
From Copenhagen to East Africa
Mike’s career includes hospital and research work at Rigshospitalet and Hvidovre Hospital in Copenhagen, alongside international assignments with the World Health Organization in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Switzerland. This breadth of experience is particularly valuable in a practice serving both Zanzibar residents and people travelling far from their usual healthcare team.
At Hvidovre, his clinical and research work included diarrhoea and tropical infections. His wider interests in infection, nutrition and tropical disease have also taken him to Ethiopia, where he worked with local and international research colleagues.
Research with a clinical purpose
Mike completed his PhD at the University of Copenhagen in 2019. His doctoral work examined severe acute malnutrition in Ethiopian children, looking at bloodstream infections and prolonged diarrhoeal illness.
He has continued to contribute to research on childhood diarrhoea, tropical diseases and the gut microbiome. Together, these studies explore how infection and nutritional health interact, and why some children experience a longer or more complicated illness.
At ZanAid
Mike’s work ranges from everyday medical concerns to travel-related illness and more involved questions about infection. He also advises on vaccinations and health planning for travel, bringing his experience in Denmark and East Africa to each consultation.
Mike consults in Danish and English.
